The match between Paola Racquets and Birkirkara Badders was a very exciting and balanced one. Playing without the injured Maria Borg Birkirkara Badders produced one of their best performances to consolidate their runner-up position.
Badders drew first blood when they won the Mixed Doubles. Aldo Polidano/Klara O’Berg beat Paola’s Owen Grech/Anna Galea in three sets. The Birkirkara pair won the first set easily 21-9. Somehow they lost grip on the game and consequently the second set 21-19. The third and decisive set was extermely close but our pair managed to win 21-18.
Paola’s reaction was immediate as they drew level when they won the Men’s Singles through Matthew Abela who beat Albert Bezzina 21-18, 21-15 in another close encounter.
Badders went again in front through Marica Micallef who came from behind to win her Ladies’ Singles against the promising Jacqueline Grech Licari 16-21, 21-11, 21-13. As the score suggests, Marica made a remarkable comeback and dictated play to win the next two sets easily.
Ivan Salomone/Aldo Polidano made sure of the points for their team by winning the Men’s Doubles after combining well together to achieve a hard-fought but merited win. They lost the first set 22-20, but then won the next two 21-17, 21-11.
Already knowing the final points were in the bag, Badders Ladies Doubles pair – Marica Micallef/Klara O’Berg – were in no pressure and played confidently to overcome their Paola opponents – Anna Galea/Jacqueline Grech Licari – 21-19, 21-12.
