Despite missing some regulars and giving debuts to newcomers, Birkirkara Go & Fun were still good enough to beat bottom-of-the-table Shuttles Fort Blocks 5-0 and go joint second with Paola BC, and still have a game to play.
Go & Fun started on a good note when Daniella Galea/Stefan Salomone won their Mixed Doubles against G. Saliba/M. Briffa 21-16, 21-5. The Suttles pair managed to provide opposition in the first set but in the second the Birkirkara pair took control of the proceedings and won easily.
Song Chen Jun gave his team a 2-0 lead when he won his Men’s Singles against C. Spiteri 21-13, 21-13, in a game in which he had total control.
Klara O’Berg gave Birkirkara an unassailable 3-0 lead winning her Ladies Singles game handsomely 21-9, 21-5 against Shuttles player G. Vella Incorvaja.
With the match won and lost Shuttles went near to win at least a game when their Men’s Doubles pair C. Spiteri/S. Spiteri lost in three sets to Stefan Salomone/Albert Bezzina. The latter won the first set comfortably 21-14; however Spiteri/Spiteri made an extra effort and managed to win the second 21-18. The third deciding set was won by Salomone/Bezzina 21-16.
In the final game – the Ladies Doubles – Go & Fun duo O’Berg/Galea beat Shuttles ladies Saliba/Vella Incorvaja 21-11, 21-13 to register a 5-0 win for their team.
The final match of the Mixed Team League will be played next Monday at Kirkop between Birkirkara teams Smart Office Supplies (already crowned champions) and Go & Fun (who are fighting for the runner-up spot with Paola BC). If Go & Fun wins, the team finishes runner-up, if it loses, a decider has to be played against Paola BC to determine the runner-up position.
