Birkirkara Smart Office Supplies began their league campaign with a win on Paola BC, until then still unbeaten and one of the contenders for the final honours, thus avenging the defeat suffered by the other Birkirkara team – Go & Fun – last week against the same opponents. However it was not an easy win as Smart Office Supplies players played below their usual selves.
The match started badly for Birkirkara as Paola took a 2-0 lead from the first two games played. First Marica Micallef/Stephen Ferrante lost the Mixed Doubles to J. Cassar/H. Thomsen in a thrilling three-setter: 21-17, 11-21, 14-21; then Samuel Cali was beaten by Paola’s K. Vella 22-20, 21-14 in a close match.
However Smart Office Supplies made a strong reaction and managed to overturn the final result in their favour, winning the last three games. Fiorella Sadowski beat J. Grech Licari in three sets in the Ladies Singles to put her team back in the match. She won the first set easily 21-8, lost her composure in the second and lost 21-14, and then reacted bravely to win the third 21-6.
The Men’s Doubles was a do-or-die affair as Smart Office Supplies had to win this game to have a chance for the points. And win they did as Samuel/Stephen beat H. Thomsen/O. Grech 21-14, 21-12 in a game in which they held the upper hand throughout.
In the deciding Ladies Doubles Fiorella/Marica had to fight hard to beat Paola’s J. Grech/J. Grech Licari 21-15, 21-19 to win the points for Birkirkara Smart Office Supplies, thus starting the defence of the title on a good note.
