In the second match of the Mixed Teams’ season, BBC Smart Office Supplies visited Luxol Top Choice in their away match, which promised to be an interesting encounter, given that our players were facing some of their ex-teammates for the first time. Yet again, BBC Smart Office Supplies were unable to field their full team, but despite this, still managed to overcome the challenge with a convincing 4-1 score line.
BBC Smart Office Supplies had to do without our Male Mixed National Champion and Ladies Doubles National Champion, Stephen Ferrante and Marica Micallef respectively, both of whom having family commitments which have forced them to re-frame from participating in badminton events prior to this match. Our team also had to do without Daniella Galea who recently suffered a knee injury, ironically whilst playing against one of her teammates in the Da Vinci Individuals Singles competition. We wish Daniella a quick recovery. Not to mention Marija Attard, who is also unavailable at this time.
As in the previous match, we were able to draft in our Junior Under 19 Girls singles National Champion Yanika Polidano. At only 14 years of age, the experience she was bound to gain was priceless.
The formation for the Mixed doubleswas, as expected, a father and daughter combination. Aldo and Yanika came up against Stefan Salomone and Klara O’Berg. Although we lost our only game 21/12, 21/9, the score line does not give our players justice. Both Aldo and Yanika played well for their first mixed game together. Yanika deserves praise on how she handled the pressure, considering her lack of experience in the mixed doubles game.
BBC Men’s singles player Rostislav Peniska overcame the challenge of Samuel Cali with a score of 21/16, 21/11.In the first set, Rostislav managed to control Samuel’s aggressive play in and as Samuel began to tire out, Rostislav took complete control and went on to comfortably win the second set.
In the Women’s singles, BBC’s Triple Crown National Champion Fiorella Marie Sadowski, overcame the whole hearten challenge from Luxol’s Tiziana Mifsud 21/9, 21/11. As the score line suggest, Fiorella’s level of experience and physical condition was understandably too high a hurdle for Tiziana, although her effort was plausible.
Having already won the Women’s and Men’s singles, BBC Smart Office Supplies needed only to win either the Men’s or Ladies Doubles games to win the evening’s match. The Men’s doubles event brought together BBC’s Aldo Polidano (who is the reigning Men’s Doubles National Champion)and Rostislav Peniska against Luxol’s Samuel Cali and Stefan Salomone. As expected this game proved to be an all-out aggressive encounter between the two pair of players. After a very close and exciting game, Aldo and Rostislav controlled Luxol’s furia, to eventually win the game 21/18, 21/15 and match for BBC at their opponents dismay.
Having already won the match at 3-1, the last game of the evening, the Women’s doubles, was just a formality.BBC’s National Senior and JuniorU19 champion, Fiorella and Yanika respectively, matched together for the first time ever, to play against Tiziana Mifsud and Klara O’Berg. The former managed to easily win the first set 21/10. Complacency fell in the second set, which enabled Fiorella’s & Yanika’s opponents to win the second set 19/21. Finally the BBC pair composed themselves again and easily won the third set 21/9, to close the evening with an emphatic 4-1 match win for BBC Smart Office Supplies, thus regaining the top spot of the league table.
