With the results obtained during in the latest round of fixtures the division 1 title race has been thrown wide open with four or five players (three from our club) challenging for the honours.
The first match of the evening resulted in a derby between two Birkirkara players – Samuel Cali and Aldo Polidano. The latter was in fine form and won the first set 21-16. In the second set he was leading 11-7, however he had to concede the set, retiring injured. Thus the match ended in a draw.
Samuel went on to beat Paola’s H. Thomsen rather easily in his second match, emerging winner 21-15, 21-13. With the points won in this round of fixtures Samuel is in with a good chance of winning the title. On the other hand Aldo had to award his second match as a walk-over to clubmate Stephen Ferrante.
The latter, on his part, had lost his first match to clubmate Stefan Salomone, a one-sided match which ended 21-6, 21-11 for the latter. Stefan went on to beat clubmate Song in another derby-match 21-10, 21-13 to enter with a chance of winning the title despite having to award his first two matches of the campaign as walk-overs.
Birkirkara’s Song won a merited point in his other match against Paola’s K. Vella who until then was still unbeaten. Vella won the first set 21-16, with Song making some unforced errors. In the second set Song improved his performance to win comfortably 21-12.
The balanced and close competition in this division continued to show with the matches played in this round of fixtures.
Albert Bezzina beat clubmate Fiorella M. Sadowski 22-20, 21-16 and then drew with Msida’s K. Sciberras 13-21, 21-16.
On her part Fiorella beat Shuttles player M. Briffa 21-14, 21-19 in her second match.
Ivan Salomone beat clubmate Arif Rochman 22-20, 21-13 but then lost to Paola’s M. Abela in a close match 21-18, 21-18.
Arif lost his second match to Paola’s E. Abela 21-13, 21-17.
