Play resumed in the Junior Mixed Team League with our juniors facing Paola Bloom. Although faccing a team replete with players of national and international experience, and also favourites for the title, Birkirkara Junior Academy obtained an encouraging result, just losing 3-2.
In the Mixed Doubles, despite all their efforts, Luigi Grech/Sarah Debono were no match for Paola’s experienced O. Grech/M. Vella, and lost 21-6, 21-7.
Paola went 2-0 when Matthew Galea played Paola’s M. Abela in the Men’s Singles and lost 21-10, 21-17. Despite this loss, one has to say that Matthew was very unlucky in this match. In the first set nothing seemed to go right for him and was very unlucky in certain shots, with near misses. In the second set, as the score shows, Matthew gave a good account of himself and was unlucky not to force a deciding third set.
Yanika Polidano pulled one back for Birkirkara when she played P. Gambin in the Ladies Singles. She won the first set 21-15; however she seemed to lose concentration when it mattered and lost the second 21-16. Yanika increased her efforts in the third deciding set to win 21-16 and make the score 2-1.
Yet Paola made sure of victory when Grech/Abela won the Men’s Doubles 21-7, 21-9 against Birkirkara’s Matthew/Luigi.
Our juniors have to commended for their never-say-die spirit as Yanika/Sarah produced another nail-biting performance to beat Vella/M. Ellul 21-18, 23-21 in the Ladies Doubles to earn a respectable and deserved 3-2 scoreline.
Birkirkara’s next and final match is against Paola Junior Academy, a match which will determine the runner-up spot.
