Greenwich End Season with Full Points

In their last match of the season newly-crowned champions Birkirkara Greenwich ended their commitments with full points marking their all-round superiority. This is a credit to the players forming the team – namely captain Stephen Ferrante, Stefan Salomone, Samuel Cali, Fiorella Marie Sadowski, Katerina Vella Ryabkova and Olga Fedoktina – mainly for their hard work and determination throughout the season, but also to Club coach Martin Farrugia who worked patiently not only with this team’s players, but also with the whole group of Birkirkara players.

The first set was a one-sided affair where Birkirkara’s Mixed Doubles pair Stefan Salomone/Olga Fedotkina found little difficulty in defeating Owen Grech/Anna Galea 21-7, 21-9.

In the Men’s Singles Greenwich player Samuel Cali was given a hard game by young Matthew Abela and it was only through experience that he managed to win the match 21-14, 21-18.

In the Ladies’ Singles, Katerina Vella Ryabkova summed up her superiority over Paola’s Sandra Spiteri winning easily 21-8, 21-6.

The Men’s Doubles turned out to be a very balanced game. Paola’s young pair Owen Grech/Matthew Abela offered stiff opposition to Greenwich’s Stephen Ferrante/Samuel Cali. Throughout the game Stephen and Samuel did not play their usual selves and made a lot of unforced errors. This coupled with the resilience of the Paola pair – who have to be commended – made the going tough for the Birkirkara players who were only able to win in 3 sets, 21-17, 19-21, 21-17.

Greenwich ended the match with another easy win in the Ladies’ Doubles when Fiorella Sadowski/Katerina Vella Ryabkova beat Anna Galea/Sandra Spiteri 21-9, 21-10.

Birkirkara Badminton Club committee, in the name of all its members, would like to congratulate the Greenwich team members and coach Martin Farrugia for their success.
