Birkirkara players triumph in all categories – Fiorella wins Triple Crown
The National Championships 2014 organized by Badminton Malta saw Birkirkara players win all categories available, thus making an en plein, whilst Fiorella Sadowski won her first-ever Triple Crown.
In the Ladies Singles Fiorella met another Marica Micallef, Birkirkara player. Although Fiorella was always in control, one has to say that Marica put up a brave display and managed to achieve a creditable result. Fiorella retained the title winning 21-14, 21-16.
The Men’s Singles saw the return of two former champions who were missing in last year’s edition – Birkirkara’s Stefan Salomone and Paola’s Kenneth Vella. In an entertaining match Stefan emerged winner in two straight sets 21-8, 21-12, thus winning his 7th singles title.
The reigning Mixed Doubles champions – Fiorella Sadowski/Stephen Ferrante retained the title won last year when they beat Paola’s Jo’Anne Cassar/Edmond Abela 22-20, 21-13. As the score shows, the first set was a balanced one and the Birkirkara pair had to come from behind to win it; however the second set was a different story as Fiorella/Stephen controlled the proceedings from the start.
Birkirkara’s Fiorella Sadowski/Marica Micallef teamed up to beat Paola’s youngsters Sarah Fava/Cheryl Gilford easily 21-11, 21-8 in the Ladies Doubles in a one-sided match.
The all-Birkirkara Men’s Doubles final, thus guaranteeing another Birkirkara winner, between holders Samuel Cali/Stephen Ferrante and challengers Aldo Polidano/Stefan Salomone will be played on a later date as both Samuel and Stephen sustained injuries in their previous games and Aldo/Stefan sportingly agreed for a postponement.
Whilst congratulating all winners for their personal success Birkirkara Badminton Club committee would like to express its thanks for the hard work done by Head Coach Martin Farrugia and also for the good number of supporters who turned up to give a much-needed and appreciated helping hand to our players.
Competitions continue next week with the Mixed Team League and the Junior Team League followed by the Mixed Individual League.
