Birkirkara players involved in this week’s fixtures ended their commitments with one win and one defeat each. Stephen Ferrante met Paola’s O. Grech and surprisingly lost 21-19, 21-17. As the score shows the match was a balanced one but Steve was not his usual self in this match. He made amends in his second match when he beat clubmate Song Chen Ju 21-17, 21-14.
The latter, on his part, started the evening with a win against clubmate Samuel Cali. In a balanced match Song emerged winner 21-19, 21-19.
Samuel won his match against O. Grech 22-20, 21-12. As the score shows Grech put up a brave opposition in the first set but in the second Samuel ran out easy winner.
Albert Bezzina drew his first match against E. Abela of Paola. He won the first set 21-16, only to lose his concentration in the second to lose 21-13. However he won his second match against Shuttles player M. Briffa 21-12, 21-11.
Ivan Salomone won his first match of the evening easily 21-11, 21-13 when he beat M. Briffa of Shuttles; but then lost his second match to E. Abela of Paola 21-18, 21-15. After a close and balanced first set he let his opponent take a good lead in the beginning, which he maintained to the end.
Birkirkara’s young and promising Yanika Polidano first beat M. Vella 21-10, 21-12 and then drew against C. Gilford 21-17, 19-21. She was unlucky to lose the second set which turned out to be a balanced one.
Birkirkara’s two young representatives in this division came out with flying colours in their respective matches.
Clarissa Grech won three out of four points when she drew with B. Abdilla 11-21, 21-19 and then had a walkover J. Abela.
Sarah Debono won four out of four points beating B. Abela 21-10, 21-14 and M. C. Mizzi 21-10, 21-9.
