The start of the Individual Singles League organised by Badminton Malta brought mixed results (some of them very unfortunate) for our players.

Div 1
On the first day of the league Stefan Salomone was unfortunate to give walk-overs to K. Vella and O. Grech of Paola) for family reasons. He made amends, however, in his next two matches, being awarded a walk-over by clubmate Aldo Polidano (injured) and beating H. Thomsen of Paola rather easily 21-10, 21-7, dominating his Danish opponent from start to finish.

Aldo beat Owen Grech of Paola in his first match. He found some difficulty in the first set managing to beat his younger opponent 22-20, but then found his composure to win the second easily 21-11. In his second match he lost a balanced first set to Paola’s K. Vella 21-18, but then had to retire injured in the second with the score 13-11.

Because of this he had to concede two walk-overs in his next matches to clubmates Stefan and Song Chen Ju.

Besides the two points won from this walk-over, Song obtained another point from his drawn encounter against Paola’s H. Thomsen. The match finished 13-21, 22-20.

Div 3
Birkirkara’s representatives in this division had a good start with Yanis Boju leading the proceedings. Yanis won his first match against Paola’s J. Grech Licari 21-13, 21-7; drew his second against C. Spiteri of Shuttles 15-21, 21-15; beat Paola’s P. Cassar 21-12, 21-18 and clubmate Daniel Abdilla 21-12, 21-14.

On his part Daniel beat C. Spiteri of Shuttles 21-15, 21-16; beat J. Grech Licari of Paola 21-13, 21-19; drew with clubmate Jesmond Galea 21-10, 17-21.

Jesmond started his campaign with a drawn match with G. Camilleri of Shuttles 21-16, 18-21; then lost to Msida’s N. Degaetano 21-16, 21-16; and lost to Paola’s P. Cassar 21-12, 6-5 (before retiring injured).

Div 4
Our representatives in this division also had a good start. Young Matthew Galea started his campaign beating clubmate Daniella Galea 21-8, 21-9. He then beat R. Zammit of Shuttles 21-12, 21-13. Daniella also lost her second match to Paola’s M. Abela 21-17, 21-11.

Marica Micallef beat clubmate Edward Grech 21-17, 21-10 and won a walk-over R. Zammit of Shuttles.

Edward won his second match against Paola’s A. Galea 21-18, 21-18.

Div 6
In her first match of the season Clarissa Grech had to award a walk-over to B. Abela. On her part Sarah Debono drew with B. Abdilla 21-19, 16-21.
