Start of Individual Mixed League

With the National Championships over, attention of badminton enthusiasts will be drawn to the completion of the Mixed Team League and the Junior Team League and the Individual Mixed League which started this week.
Div 2
Birkirkara’s representatives in this division – Song Chen Jun/Marija Attard – managed three points out of a possible four in their first outing. In their first match they met Paola’s K. Vella/P. Gambin. In a balanced first set they lost 21-18, a loss which could be attributed to lack of understanding, being the first time they played together. The second set, however, was a different story as Song and Marija produced some fine badminton to win the second set 21-13, thus earning a merited point.
In their second match of the evening they met Shuttles pair C. Spiteri/C. Spiteri. In another balanced match they kept heir nerve to win 21-16, 21-18.
Div 3
Birkirkara’s Albert Bezzina/Daniella Galea met Paola’s P. Cassar/M. Ellul and lost the first set narrowly 21-18. They made amends in the second and, keeping the upperhand throughout, they won it 21-16, thus earning a point.
They won another point from their second match against clubmates Yanis Boju/Camille Campos De Lemos. The latter won the first set 21-16 but then lost the second 21-17 in a balanced match.
Yanis/Camille could do nothing in their second match against Paola’s experienced pair G. Grech/A. Cassar losing 21-10, 21-8.
Div 4
Birkirkara’s sole representatives in this division – promising young pair Matthew Galea/Yanika Polidano – drew both their matches of the evening. In their first match they narrowly lost the first set to Shuttles pair A. Zammit/G. Vella Incorvaia 21-18. However they took the upperhand in the second and ran out easy winners 21-14.
In their second match they met Paola’s M. Abela/S. Fava. This time they won the first set 21-17 but lost the second with the same score. However one must commend and encourage Matthew and Yanika for their never-say-die spirit and some fine badminton they played.
