Stefan/Klara on Top in Mixed Division 1

When play continued this week in connection with the Individual Mixed League, those representing our club had mixed results.

Div. 1
Stefan Salomone/Klara O’Berg obtained four out of four points from their matches against direct opponents for the final honours, and so lead the table with maximum points.

In their first match they met clubmates and National Champions 2014 Stephen Ferrante/Fiorella Sadowski. The first set started well for Stephen/Fiorella as at one point they were in front. However Stefan/Klara increased their efforts and managed to cut down the arrears until emerging winners 21-15. In the second set Stefan/Klara took command of the proceedings from the beginning and never allowed their opponents to settle down, forcing them to commit several unforced errors in the process and win 21-12.

In their next match they beat another fancied pair for the title – Paola’s experienced E. Abela/J. Cassar – 21-16, 21-15. As they did in the previous match Stefan/Klara offerred stiff opposition and manged to emerge winners 21-16, 21-15.

Aldo Polidano/Marica Micallef drew their first match against Paola’s E. Abela/J. Cassar. Our players, although trying hard, could not topple their opponents in the first set and lost 21-15. They improved however in the second and turned the tables on the Paolites winning 21-16, thus earning a merited point.

In their second match they met clubmates Stephen/Fiorella. They felt the effort produced in the previous match and lost the first set 21-11. Aldo/Marica improved in the second set and play was more balanced. However Stephen/Fiorella were intent on making amends for the loss in their first match and won also the second 21-16.

Div. 2

In the only match played by our representatives in this division Song Chen Jun/Marija Attard earned a point against Paola’s M. Abela/S. Spiteri. In the first set the Birkirkara players disappointed and lost 21-13. However they upped their morale and combined well to win the second set 21-16.

Div. 3

Another win came Birkirkara’s way when Albert Bezzina/Daniella Galea met Paola’s G. Grech/A. Cassar. Thje first set was extremely close and was won 24-22. In the second Albert/Daniella took a quick lead, which they increased as the match went on, to win 21-13.

Div. 4

Young Matthew Galea/Yanika Polidano met S. Cassar/C. Gilford of Paola in the only match involving Birkirkara players in this division. Although the first set was balanced, Matthew/Yanika made some unforced errors which cost them the set, losing 21-16. Matters turned worse in the second as, with the score 9-2 against, Matthew had to retire injured, thus losing the match. Besides, the pair had to award their opponents Z. Cilia/R. Spiteri of Shuttles a walkover in the second match.
