Birkirkara Go & Fun, captained by Stefan Salomone, lost their opening match of the Team League against Paola, the latter thus making it two wins out of two matches played. It was an entertaining and close match which our team could have won with some more attention and luck. Go & Fun had their leading female player Katerina Vella Ryabkova missing due to injury.
Birkirkara struck first blood through Mixed Doubles pair Klara O’Berg/Stefan Salomone who beat Paola’s Anna Galea/Henrik Thomsen 21-17, 21-4. The first set was balanced however, in the second set Klara/Stefan increased their tempo and won easily.
Paola won the Men’s Singles when Kenneth Vella beat Go & Fun’s Song Chen Jun 21-13, 21-17, thus levelling the score. Song made a number of unforced errors which cost him the first set. However he played much better in the second and was unfortunate not to win it.
Paola went in front when their female player Jacqueline Grech Licari beat Birkirkara’s Jacqueline Abela De Giovanni in a game which went to three sets. Go & Fun’s Jacqueline won the first set, which turned out to be a very close affair, 24-22. However she tired out and lost the next two sets 21-14, 21-7.
Birkirkara’s never-say-die spirit won them the Men’s Doubles to level the score. Stefan and Ivan Salomone held the upper hand throughout and beat Henrik Thomsen/Owen Grech somewhat easily 21-16, 21-11.
With the score at 2-2, the Ladies Doubles was to be the deciding game. And what a game it was! Unfortunately, and rather unluckily, our girls lost a very close encounter when Paola’s J. Grech Licari/A. Galea beat J. Abela De Giovanni/K. O’Berg 21-19, 21-18.
Birkirkara Go & Fun 2-3 Paola BC
